I learned to be a tinker from my Dad who was a truck mechanic and all my life things have been breaking and I have been fixing. Old cars, old boats, old houses, old appliances, mowers, etc. On the good side, I seldom have to farm out to expensive repairmen for much, unless I choose to. On the downside, my friends turn to me often to fix things - which I do -. So, your repair story on old equipment just sounds like a typical one to me. At 79 I have just gotten used to repairs going like this and expecting complications every time. When a job goes smoothly, it's great, and I am pleasantly surprised. I guess the moral is not to go into a repair on old stuff with high expectations!
